Workspace for WordPress is a free app for iPhone, iPad and Android. It is not another AI chat app with its own subscription. It is a window onto the AI Engine already running on your site: the same models, the same conversations, the same keys, and nothing in between.
What Workspace for WordPress is
Three things follow from that picture. The app never sees an API key: it only knows the names of your models, and the site does the talking. Your conversations, folders, pinned chats and preferences live in your WordPress database, per user, so a chat you start on the phone is waiting in the browser and the other way round. And we, Meow Apps, run no server in this path. Nothing you type reaches us.
What you can do from your phone
- Talk to every model your site has. OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Mistral, OpenRouter and the rest, grouped by environment, switchable mid-conversation. When ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini goes down, you pick another one and carry on.
- Ask it to work on the site. Draft a post, fix a title, look up an order, clean the media library through the other Meow Apps plugins. Anything that writes shows you which tool it wants to call, with which arguments, and asks first. MCP for site owners explains what that looks like.
- Generate images straight into your media library, with a lightbox to check them.
- Read replies properly. Tables, code with syntax highlighting and a copy button, lists, quotes. No walls of plain text.
- Keep it yours. Light or dark, five accents, stored on your site so the tablet and the phone agree.
Knowledge bases, MCP servers and Code Engine functions show up in the app too; those three need AI Engine Pro. Everything else above, WordPress tools and image generation included, is in the free plugin.
Is Workspace free?
Yes. The app is free, with no in-app purchase and no tier above it. AI Engine’s Workspace is in the free core of the plugin. Your site already runs, so there is nothing new to host. The only bill is the one your AI provider already sends you, for what you use, at their price, with nothing added on top. Everyone else rents you a seat on their AI. This one is yours.
What you need before installing
It would be a waste of your evening to find this out afterwards, so here is the honest list. You need a self-hosted WordPress (6.0 or newer, not WordPress.com), the free AI Engine plugin with at least one AI provider configured, HTTPS on the site (WordPress only issues application passwords over TLS), and an administrator account, since Workspace is admin-only today. How to pair the app with your WordPress site
- Open Workspace in your WordPress admin (Meow Apps → AI Engine → Workspace) and choose Pair a device.
- Install the app and point the camera at the QR code. The code is single-use and expires in five minutes. There is a manual connection too, with your site address and an application password.
- That is it. The app stores one application password, in the phone’s secure keystore, and nothing else.

Android and iOS: what differs
We would rather say it here than in a one-star review. The Android version matches iOS 1.5 for everything above. It does not have the Offline environment, does not show which model wrote each reply, cannot edit or regenerate a sent message, cannot export a conversation as markdown yet, and cannot save a generated image to the phone from the lightbox. Attachments come from the file picker, not the camera. Agents is a placeholder on both platforms. All of that is on the list, and the app updates independently of the plugin.

Is Workspace for WordPress free?
Yes, on both stores, with no in-app purchase. You pay your AI provider for what you use, exactly as you do today with AI Engine.
Do I need the AI Engine plugin?
Yes. The app is a client for the Workspace inside AI Engine, which is free. Without a site running AI Engine, the app only shows the connect screen.
Which Android and iOS versions does it need?
Android 8.0 or newer, iOS 17 or newer. One app each for phones and tablets.
Where are my conversations stored?
In your own WordPress database, per user. The phone caches nothing authoritative, and Meow Apps never receives them.
Does it work with ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini?
It works with every model configured in AI Engine on your site: OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Mistral, OpenRouter and the others. You switch between them inside a conversation.
If you already run AI Engine, you have everything but the app. If you do not, AI Engine is free and takes ten minutes to set up, and the phone is a very good reason to finally do it 🙂
