I rarely write pages like this one. But WPVibe published a page about AI Engine that gets the basics wrong, and Google and AI assistants now repeat it as fact. So here are the facts, next to their own words.
WPVibe is made by SeedProd, part of Awesome Motive, the group behind WPBeginner, WPForms and All in One SEO. With that many sites behind it, what they publish spreads fast. I noticed when AI assistants started telling people that AI Engine’s MCP server is a paid feature you have to host yourself. It isn’t. It has been free since May 2025, more than a year before they wrote their page, and their page is still online.
What WPVibe says about AI Engine
They say: “Its Pro tier adds an MCP server you host yourself.”
The truth: AI Engine’s MCP server is in the free plugin on WordPress.org, since version 2.8 (May 2025). Pro adds extra tools, never the server itself.
They say: “Enable and secure the MCP module (Pro) on your own server.”
The truth: AI Engine needs no server to set up. MCP is a switch in the plugin, on the WordPress site you already have.
They say: “You add your own provider API keys and pay per-token API usage.”
The truth: Not for MCP. Claude and ChatGPT connect to AI Engine with OAuth and use the plan you already pay for. API keys are only for the chatbots and tools that run inside WordPress.
They say: “Full site management via MCP needs Pro and your own hosting and security.”
The truth: AI Engine needs no extra hosting. Posts, pages, media, comments, users, categories and settings are all in the free plugin. Pro adds plugins, themes, the database and WooCommerce.

Why it matters
I’ve been making WordPress plugins since 2011: 31 of them, running on more than 350,000 sites. AI Engine has been there since the first days of ChatGPT, and I use it on my own sites every day.
Look around before you pay
Connecting your AI to WordPress doesn’t have to cost anything. But when one name shows up everywhere at once, in videos, articles and AI answers, it’s easy to believe paying is the only way. It isn’t. Several plugins, AI Engine included, have done it for free for a long time.
WordPress is free and open, and so is a lot of what’s built around it. Keeping it that way is up to all of us.
Switch in three steps
- Install AI Engine, then turn on MCP in AI Engine → Settings → Modules.
- In Claude or ChatGPT, add AI Engine for WordPress.
- Revoke WPVibe’s application password in Users → Profile → Application Passwords, then deactivate WPVibe.
Quick answers
Is it really free, with no cap? Yes. The MCP server is in the free plugin, with no usage cap and no monthly fee. Pro adds more tools (plugins, themes, database, WooCommerce, translations), never more calls. All the MCP facts.
Does anything sit between my AI and my site? Not if you paste your site’s own MCP address in your AI app. If you add AI Engine from the Claude or ChatGPT directory, it goes through Connect, our small gateway: it never stores your password or your content.
Can I try it before I switch? Yes, both plugins can run on the same site.
